Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader.

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

To Prepare:

Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.
Reflect on your results of the CliftonStrengths Assessment*, and consider how the results relate to your leadership traits.
*not required to submit CliftonStrengths Assessment

The Assignment (2-3 pages):

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:

A description of your core values.
A personal mission and vision statement.
An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile
A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen.
A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.
Be sure to incorporate your colleagues’ feedback on your CliftonStrengths Assessment from this Module’s Discussion 2.

Personal Leadership Philosophy

My personal leadership philosophy is centered around the belief that a good leader is someone who demonstrates integrity, empathy, and effective communication. These core values guide my actions and decisions as a leader and influence the way I interact with others.

Integrity is an essential trait for a good leader. I believe in being honest, transparent, and ethical in all aspects of my work. By being true to my word and modeling integrity, I can gain the trust and respect of those I lead, creating an environment of openness and collaboration. I strive to lead by example and hold myself accountable for my actions.

Empathy is another characteristic that I believe is crucial for a good leader. By understanding and considering the perspectives and feelings of others, I can create a supportive and inclusive work environment. I aim to listen actively to my team members and provide them with the support and resources they need to succeed. By recognizing and valuing diversity, I can foster a culture of respect and appreciation.

Effective communication is also a key aspect of my leadership philosophy. I believe in being clear, concise, and transparent in my communication with others. By providing clear expectations and objectives, I can ensure that everyone on my team understands their roles and responsibilities. I also value open and honest feedback, both giving and receiving, as it allows for continuous improvement and growth.

The results of my CliftonStrengths Assessment further support my leadership philosophy. According to my profile, my top strengths include adaptability, harmony, and positivity. These strengths align with my belief in empathy, as they reflect my ability to understand and adapt to different situations and personalities, as well as my positive and optimistic attitude towards challenges.

Two key behaviors that I wish to strengthen are delegation and assertiveness. While I value collaboration and input from my team members, I sometimes struggle with delegating tasks and authority. I have a tendency to take on too much myself, which can lead to stress and burnout. Additionally, I sometimes find it challenging to be assertive in expressing my opinions and ideas.

To improve upon these two key behaviors, I plan to implement the following development plan. Firstly, I will delegate more effectively by clearly defining tasks, setting expectations, and empowering my team members to take ownership of their work. I will start by delegating smaller tasks and gradually increase the level of responsibility. Secondly, to improve my assertiveness, I will practice expressing my opinions and ideas in a confident and concise manner. I will seek opportunities to speak up in team meetings and engage in active listening and constructive dialogue.

Overall, my personal vision is to create a healthy work environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to achieve their full potential. I believe that by embodying integrity, empathy, and effective communication, and by strengthening my delegation and assertiveness skills, I can work towards achieving this vision and becoming a better leader.
