Let the salary be x
He spends 20/100 * x = $<<20/100*500=100>>100 on rent
He spends 30/100 * x = $<<30/100*500=150>>150 on groceries
The total amount he spends on groceries and rent is $150+$100 = $<<150+100=250>>250
He spends the rest of his salary which is 100% - 30% - 20% = 100%-50% = 50% on other expenses
If 50% represents $250, then 1% represents $250/50 = $<<250/50=5>>5
His salary is x = $5 * 100= $<<5*100=500>>500. Answer: \boxed{500}.
